Statement from House and Senate Republican Leaders Concerning the Recent Superior Court Ruling on Early Voting

Last Friday, the Delaware Superior Court handed down a decision finding Delaware's early voting law to be in violation of the state constitution. Many House and Senate Republicans raised the unconstitutional nature of the legislation, House Bill 38, when it was debated in 2019. Unfortunately, our objections fell on deaf ears.

It was a hot and humid mid-July day, one of the warmest in the summer up to that point. The tractor I was using on my family's farm had cut out, so I headed back to the farmhouse to get a couple of tools. Oddly, such hurdles don't get under my skin. There was a job to be done, so there was no need - or time - to be annoyed. To say that many here in Sussex have a deep appreciation for Delaware's agricultural community would be a gross understatement. I come from a family of farmers. In fact, our family is direct descendants of the owners of the land where the Town of Georgetown is now located. While not debating legislation in the Senate, I can often be found working on our family farm. Sometimes, it's even necessary to have to repair broken-down equipment in the middle of the day.

For race fans, Delaware is known for being home of the "Monster Mile." Hosting horse races, NASCAR and even the IndyCar at one point, Dover International Speedway has been a fixture in our state since 1969. By contrast, Delawareans living in rural areas know the state as home of the "last mile." Slow, unreliable internet is prevalent in Kent and Sussex counties once you leave the more urban settings. In many instances, internet access isn't even available.

Governor Carney Signs Senate Bill 127

Governor John Carney on Tuesday signed Senate Bill 127 alongside members of the General Assembly, the Delaware Prosperity Partnership, business owners, and local elected officials. This legislation was laid out in the Governor's 2021 State of the State Address. Senate Bill 127 creates a Site Readiness Fund that will promote economic growth and stability by investing in the development or improvement of commercial and industrial sites to attract job-creating businesses. The Fund will provide grants, loans or other economic assistance to qualified businesses or local governments that invest in constructing, renovating or improving infrastructure for sites that will attract new businesses or expand existing businesses within the State.
